“We are used to museums where displays remain unchanged for years. But here, it keeps changing. Every week film-makers come to browse through the exhibits and take some of them back to the set,” Yelena Morozova, head of the Mosfilm tour office, told RIA Novosti.
Thousands of costumes are stored at the studio’s storage facility. Even a professional would get lost here without the card index. It can help you find Anna Karenina’s ball gown or Tsar Boris Godunov’s fur cloak. The wardrobe department does not just provide actors with costumes, but rents them out to individuals who need them for parties or photo sessions.
“We have a lot of historical costumes, unusual clothes and headdresses. Some of them have been imported, others made for specific roles,” said costume designer Ella Kuznetsova.
Mosfilm, one of Russia’s largest film studios, was set up in 1920 and has held its current name since 1935. Famous Russian directors have worked there, including Andrei Tarkovsky, Leonid Gaidai, Eldar Ryazanov and Vasily Shukshin. The company has produced over 2,500 films, many of them winners of major international awards.
