Afghanistan has postponed its parliamentary elections by four months until September over the shortage of funds and security concerns in the war-torn country, the election commission said.

Parliamentary elections were originally scheduled for May 22 as required by the Afghan constitution but have been postponed until September 18, Fazil Ahmad Manawi, a senior commissioner, told reporters.

President Hamid Karzai had earlier called for the parliamentary poll to be held on time, pledging to finance the elections if the international community failed to provide funds.

The United Nations, however, has called for reforms in the election commission before providing funds for the parliamentary election. The UN said the reforms were necessary to prevent fraud that was widely seen in the presidential poll in August when Karzai was declared the winner.
