At least five people died when a suicide bombed attacked a police station in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday, local television said.

The blast occurred in Gomal, to the south of the city of Tank neighboring the Taliban stronghold of South Waziristan, when the attacker rammed the building with an explosive laden vehicle.

According to Geo TV, three other people were injured in the blast. The TV channel said there were children among the killed.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Local authorities believe it was organized by Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, the main Taliban militant umbrella group in Pakistan.

The country has witnessed a rise in bombings believed to be conducted by Islamists in response to military operations in their strongholds in the northwest.

The Pakistani military has been holding massive operations in South Waziristan bordering with Afghanistan. The United States has also urged Pakistan to target Al Qaeda militants on its territory, accusing them of carrying out attacks on U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan.
