The Palestinian government in the West Bank has decided to render humanitarian assistance to quake-struck Haiti, Palestinian news agency WAFA reported Tuesday.

The January 12 earthquake devastated the impoverished Caribbean nation, with estimates of the number of dead ranging up to 200,000. An estimated three million people have been left without shelter and countries around the world are sending aid.

The Palestinian cabinet issued an order to establish a special committee to supervise aid distribution and instructed the Palestinian National Authority to collect information on the situation of the Palestinian community in Haiti.

The Palestinian government controlling the West Bank has expressed condolences to Haiti over the tragedy.

The Gaza Strip, which has been blockaded by Israel for four years, is also gathering aid for Haitians, donating clothes to the Red Cross mission in the enclave.

Despite a statement by international security forces that they are unable to guarantee the safety of rescue workers in Haiti at night, rescue operations continue round the clock.

The Palestinian Authority itself is one of the largest receivers of international aid.
