Russian doctors in Haiti treated more than 100 earthquake survivors over the weekend, and Emergency Situations Ministry representative said on Monday in Moscow.

The emergency clinic was flown into the quake-stricken country on one of the first Russian aid planes, but initially had difficulty finding a secure area to set up, as most open public spaces had been taken over by people who had lost their homes..

"In the airmobile hospital of the rescue center team, deployed in the Port-au-Prince Police Academy, Russian doctors over the past day helped 60 victims," a spokesperson said, adding that 16 were children.

The injuries were of varying severity and 16 required surgery. Five patients remained in the hospital for further treatment, while another 80 people received counseling from emergencies ministry psychologists.

On Saturday, the doctors treated 59 patients, including seven children and 23 surgical cases.

The January 12 earthquake devastated the impoverished Caribbean nation, with estimates of the number of dead ranging up to 200,000. Three million people may have been affected and countries around the world are sending aid.

Planes from Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry are ferrying aid in from third countries.

"Two Il-76 transport planes arrived in Caracas, where they took on board 80 tons of food, then flew to Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince," the ministry spokesman said on Monday.

He added that similar requests had been received from Britain, Peru, Sweden, Panama, Cuba and CIS countries.
