UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has arrived in the quake-struck Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, the United Nations told RIA Novosti on Sunday.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Tuesday and almost leveled the country's capital. A number of aftershocks followed.

Tens of thousands of people are feared dead, twice as many could be injured, and more than 3 million are estimated to have been left without shelter as international rescue and search efforts on the island are ongoing.

As of Saturday evening, 40 UN officials were confirmed dead in Haiti. The UN has called on the world to collect $562 million to help the impoverished Caribbean nation of some 10 million.

Italy said Sunday it is ready to write off Haiti's debt of 40 million euros ($57.4 million).
