U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has arrived to the quake-hit Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, and met with the country's president Rene Preval, CNN said on Sunday.

Clinton, who was the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit the country since Tuesday's quake, said the U.S. will assist the disaster-hit nation "in every way we can."

She arrived on a U.S. Coast Guard plane, which was carrying water, food and toiletries for about 140 staff members of the U.S. embassy. The plane will evacuate some 50 U.S. nationals when she departs.

"We will be here today, tomorrow and for the time ahead," Clinton told a news conference at the Port-au-Prince airport.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on Tuesday and almost leveled the country's capital of Port-au-Prince. A number of aftershocks followed. The most recent quake, measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale, was registered some 60 km (37 miles) to the south of Port-au-Prince late on Friday night.

According to the latest figures, some 140,000 were killed in the quake, 250,000 were injured, and more than 3 million have been left without shelter.
