The UN mission in Haiti said on Thursday that 36 of its employees were killed and 73 injured when a powerful quake hit the island nation on Tuesday.

It also said that some 160 were still missing.

The earthquake, measuring 7 on the Richter scale, devastated the impoverished Caribbean state, with thousands now feared dead beneath the rubble.

The quake, whose epicenter was located only 10 km from the capital of Port-au-Prince, destroyed many buildings, including the UN headquarters and the presidential palace.

UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon said earlier that a 38-year-old Estonian peacekeeper was pulled out of the rubble alive, calling it "a small miracle."

The secretary general did not confirm the death of Hedi Annabi, his special representative in Haiti, saying that the Tunisian remained unaccounted for.

Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said on Wednesday some hospitals had collapsed and the death toll from the quake could reach "well over 100,000."

"We need some hospitals, some medicine and some doctors," he said.

Russia has already sent four emergencies ministry planes carrying rescuers, equipment, mobile hospitals and humanitarian cargo to Haiti, with the fourth plane taking off from the Ramenskoye airfield near Moscow at 19:00 Moscow time (16:00 GMT).
