Five people died on Monday in a road traffic accident involving a truck and a minivan in Russia's western Bryansk Region, local emergency service spokesman said.

"Five people died as a result of a collision between a Mercedes goods vehicle with Moldovan numbers and Volkswagen Sharan automobile," the spokesman said, adding that none of the dead were children.

Local emergency services are working at the scene, and an investigation has begun.

The situation with traffic accidents in Russia is difficult and, according to official statistics, nearly 30,000 people died on Russian roads in 2008.

President Dmitry Medvedev has blamed the carnage on the poor state of the country's roads, as well as a "lack of discipline, and the criminal negligence of drivers."
