Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has been invited to Poland to attend ceremonies to mark the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi German death camp at Auschwitz on January 27, national media reported.

A spokesman for the Polish president said it was Lech Kaczynski's intention to "pay a joint homage to the Russian victims of Auschwitz and to the Soviet soldiers who liberated the camp."

There has been no word from the Kremlin.

If President Medvedev comes to Auschwitz it will be his first visit to Poland since he became president of Russia 18 months ago.

According to Gazeta Wyborcza, it is highly unlikely for the visit to take place, however. The daily says that Russia will probably be represented by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Nicolas Sarkozy of France and Czech President Vaclav Klaus have already confirmed their participation in the commemorative events. A high-level delegation from Israel is also expected.

The ceremonies in Auschwitz are to be attended by over 100 former prisoners.

Some 1.1 million people - mainly Jews, as well as Poles, Romani, Russians and members of other nationalities - perished in Auschwitz.
