A neo-Nazi who opened fire at the Washington Holocaust Memorial Museum last June, killing a guard, has died in a prison hospital, the FoxNews.com website reported.

James von Brunn, aged 89, entered the main entrance of the museum, located a few minutes' walk from the White House, and opened fire on the guards on June 10, 2009. Two guards were wounded, and the attacker suffered a head injury in the return fire.

One of the wounded guards, Stephen Johns, 39, later died in a hospital, where Brunn was also hospitalized in a critical condition.

The agency quoted Denise Simmons, a spokeswoman for Butner federal prison in North Carolina, as saying that James von Brunn had "a long history of poor health which included chronic congestive heart failure and sepsis."

Simmons added that Brunn was pronounced dead shortly before 1:00 p.m. local time on Wednesday.

James von Brunn was a WWII veteran and had in the past attracted publicity for his racist and anti-Semitic views. He served a five-year term in a federal prison in early 1980s for attempting an armed kidnapping at the Federal Reserve.
