A safe containing jewelry worth 2 million euros ($2.86 million) has been stolen from a Milan flat of the widow of famous Italian fashion designer Nicola Trussardi, local media have said.

The theft reportedly took place on New Year's Eve. Thieves apparently made their way into the flat located on the third floor through a balcony. The woman, Maria Luisa Gavazzeni, was out that time, reportedly feasting at her friends' country house.

There was no alarm signaling system in the flat, and the thieves fled the scene with the 20-kilogram (44-pound) steel safe unhindered, papers said.

A porter reportedly discovered the theft and called the widow. She told police a total cost of the stolen jewelry was about 2 million euros.

Nicola Trussardi, who had turned his family's glove-making business into a world famous fashion company, died in a Milan hospital in April 1999, following a car accident.
