Vladimir Zhirinovsky was reelected on Monday the leader of the Russian nationalist Liberal Democratic Party.

Vladimir Zhirinovsky was reelected on Monday the leader of the Russian nationalist Liberal Democratic Party.

All the delegates at an annual party congress voted for Zhirinovsky, 62, except the leader himself. Zhirinovsky has headed the party for almost two decades.

"I would like to see more candidates for the post, but I understand that heading an opposition party is hard work and a difficult task," Zhirinovsky said.

Zhirinovsky and his LDPR party have pursued ultranationalist party platforms, which included plans to flood Britain, proclaim a police state, and re-divide the world so that Russian soldiers could "wash their boots in the Indian Ocean."

However, the party has widely been seen as a Kremlin tool to poach votes from the opposition. LDPR was the first political party to be officially registered in 1990 ending the Communist Party's monopoly.

The message of extreme nationalism struck a chord among many Russians amid hardships and uncertainties after the Soviet breakup. LDPR became a major force in parliament after the 1993 election with 63 of the 450 State Duma seats, but has since performed worse.

Speaking at the congress on Monday, Zhirinovsky said the party could gain 20-30% of the vote during parliamentary polls due in December 2011, urging it to step up propaganda and monitor election commissions.
