A fire engulfed a crowded nightclub in the Urals city of Perm early on Saturday during a pyrotechnics display, killing at least 102 people and injuring many more.

The venue has been almost completely destroyed by the fire, which spread over an area of 400 square meters.

The emergencies ministry said 102 are dead and 134 injured. Around half of the injured are in a serious condition. Russian media reports have quoted higher fatality figures.

Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for Russia's top investigators, told RIA Novosti: "Most of the deaths were caused by burns or gas inhalation."

Regional security minister Igor Orlov told media that the venue's plastic ceiling caught fire during a display involving indoor fireworks, known as cold fireworks.

Bomb experts at the Federal Security Service (FSB) said they found no trace of explosive devices in the building.

Local health minister Dmitry Trishkin said hospitals have sufficient blood and plasma for transfusion to last 24 hours.

Russia's emergencies minister, Sergei Shoigu, Health Minister Tatyana Golikova, and interior minister, Rashid Nurgaliyev, arrived at the city early in the morning. They are currently visiting the seven hospitals where the injured have been taken.
