Two unexpected guests visited U.S. President Barack Obama's first state dinner, being the first people in modern history to crash a White House elite gathering without an invitation, the Washington Post said on Thursday.

The dinner in honor of visiting Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was attended by more than 300 guests, including Cabinet members, diplomats and Hollywood celebrities, the paper said.

Michaele and Tareq Salahi, described by the paper as polo-playing socialites from Northern Virginia, also arrived at the White House on Tuesday night and then posted on Facebook pictures with VIPs, including Vice President Joe Biden and White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel.

"Honored to be at the White House for the state dinner in honor of India with President Obama and our First Lady!" the paper quoted a Facebook statement posted by the couple.

White House security officials were confused over the incident.

"Everyone who enters the White House grounds goes through magnetometers and several other levels of screenings," Ed Donovan, a spokesman for the Secret Service, was quoted by the paper as saying.

"That was the case with the state dinner last night. No one was under any risk or threat," he added.

The couple, participants of a popular American reality-show, denied that they were interlopers, the Washington Post said.

Secret Service officials said they would investigate the case in order to discover how the uninvited guests managed to pass through White House's security cordons.
