U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday has promised to announce his decision next week on increasing troops in Afghanistan and tell the American people his "comprehensive strategy" in the military campaign.

The statement came during a joint press conference after a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who is in Washington on an official visit.

Obama said all wars must come to an end and hinted that a long-term commitment was needed to "dismantle and degrade" the enemy and ensure "Al Qaeda and its extremist allies cannot operate" in the region.

The U.S. president said it was his intention "to finish the job" that was started in 2001 after toppling the Taliban regime.

White House sources say Obama could reveal his plans on Tuesday. Military advisors have said some 30,000 additional troops may be sent to Afghanistan in 2010.
