China Central Television broadcast video of drivers and pedestrians struggling through the fog in Puyang, Henan province.
Visibility in Puyang was as low as 50 metres (yards), CCTV reported.
In Shandong province the fog reduced visibility to less than 10 metres (yards), severely affecting traffic.
The fog also covered parts of Hebei province.
