SMOS will make use of a new radiometry instrument, MIRAS, which can see the microwave radiation emitted from the planet's surface. This will enable accurate readings to be taken through vegetation and different atmospheric conditions, building up two-dimensional maps which will give an overall view of the Earth's water cycle.
