NEW DELHI, October 1 (RIA Novosti) - At least 45 people have died in floods in southern India, the IANS news agency reported on Thursday.

Heavy rain hit the country's south on Wednesday. Two Indian states, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, are among the most affected.

In Karnataka, some 30 people drowned or were buried under the debris of their houses, destroyed by the floods.

At least 15 people died in the neighboring Andhra Pradesh state. Several villages in the area were submerged by downpours, which overfilled rivers and water reservoirs, destroying hundreds of houses and the community's harvest.

Military helicopters are involved in rescue operations in the region.

India's monsoon season, which usually occurs from early July to September, regularly inflicts major destruction.
