At least 64 villages have been left without electricity in south Russia's Dagestan due to heavy snow, which has brought down mountain power lines, local emergency services said on Wednesday.

MAKHACHKALA, September 30 (RIA Novosti) - At least 64 villages have been left without electricity in south Russia's Dagestan due to heavy snow, which has brought down mountain power lines, local emergency services said on Wednesday.

Some 30 kilometers (19 miles) of power cables passing through the Caucasus mountain range have been downed, an emergencies spokesman said.

Technicians have so far repaired power lines to four villages. By Thursday, the grid should return to normal operations, the spokesman said.

Heavy snow in the North Caucasus over the weekend caused an avalanche on the border between Russia's North Ossetia and the former Georgian republic of South Ossetia, temporarily blocking the only road between the republics.

Snow usually begins in south Russia's mountains in early October.
