Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday said he is not ruling out that he may run for president in 2012.

MOSCOW, September 15 (RIA Novosti) - Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday said he is not ruling out that he may run for president in 2012.

"A while ago, I had no intention of running for the presidency, but fate has seen fit so I am not ruling out anything," he said in response to a question from Nikolai Zlobin, a member of the Valdai Discussion Club.

Last week Zlobin asked Prime Minister Vladimir Putin whether he would be running for the presidency in 2012 and competing with Medvedev.

"There will be no competition. We will reach an agreement because we are of the same blood and of the same political outlook," Putin told him.

Medvedev, Putin's hand-picked successor, was inaugurated in May 2008, and the former president became prime minister a day later, with the pair pledging to run the country in "tandem."

Medvedev later proposed introducing constitutional amendments to extend the presidential and parliamentary terms to six and five years, respectively. He signed them into law last December, after they were approved by the lower and upper houses of parliament.
