The flooding is the city’s worst in 80 years. The official death toll in north-western Turkey is nine, but unofficial records say many more have died.

According to Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard, this has been the most arid summer in the past 40 years. This is why the current conditions are so paradoxical. Last Sunday, rainfall in the Mexican capital exceeded the 1988 record.
