MOSCOW, September 9 (RIA Novosti) - Russian law-enforcement agencies have prevented two terrorist attacks in Moscow in the past week, a leading Russian daily reported on Wednesday.

Citing sources close to the investigation, Kommersant said the first attack was planned to coincide with the capital's city day celebrations on Saturday, while the second was set for Monday.

According to the newspaper, the plan was uncovered due to the detention of four militants in Chechnya last Thursday. The following day, police in Chechnya stopped a taxi carrying the brother of a man who had carried out a suicide bombing in Chechnya on August 25.

The passenger opened fire on police with a pistol and was killed when the officers shot back. He was found to be carrying explosives and a train ticket to Moscow, where he was due to arrive on Monday.

The second suspect, who investigators said was to carry out his bombing on Saturday, was detained in northeast Moscow. A suicide belt packed with explosives and shrapnel was found at the scene.

Militants in Chechnya and neighboring republics have carried out several suicide attacks in recent weeks, including a truck bombing in Ingushetia on August 24 that killed at least 24 police.

The increasing number of suicide bombings has targeted law-enforcement officers, but this is the first report of an attempt to carry out an attack in Moscow.
