MOSCOW, September 2 (RIA Novosti) - The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Java on Wednesday has climbed to 32, the country's Antara news agency reported.

Indonesia's Social Affairs Ministry said more than 700 buildings and homes were seriously damaged in the quake, which registered 7.4 on the Richter scale, and struck at 2:55 p.m. local time [GMT 07:55] some 140 kilometers (87 miles) to the south of Bandung.

Antara also reported that some 30 people are feared buried under a mudslide that occurred in a village and dozens of others have been injured by the quake.

The country's national meteorology and geophysics center said earlier on Wednesday a warning had been announced for smaller tsunamis within a 100-kilometer (62-mile) radius from the epicenter. The warning has been cancelled.

RIA Novosti's correspondent in Jakarta said the earthquake was felt in the Indonesian capital, where a number of buildings were evacuated during the quake.

Each year, close to 7,000 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or higher are registered in Indonesia.
