KABUL, August 10 (RIA Novosti) - Ten people, including two police officers, were killed on Monday as Taliban militants and security forces clashed near the Afghan capital of Kabul, a spokesman for the governor of the Logar Province said.

Mohammad Dervish said gunmen fired rocket propelled grenades at a police station and an administration building about 12:30 p.m. (08:00 GMT.)

Police returned fire, and International Security Assistance Force troops surrounded the area, while a NATO combat helicopter attacked the rebels' positions, killing at least one gunman. Another was killed by police, and a third blew himself up, the spokesman said.

The attack on the administrative center of the Logar Province, about 55 kilometers to the south of Kabul, came 10 days before presidential and local elections in Afghanistan that the Taliban has vowed to disrupt.

A Taliban spokesman said attacks would continue.

Violence across Afghanistan is currently at its highest level since the Taliban were removed from power by U.S.-led forces in 2001.
