ROSTON-ON-DON, July 23 (RIA Novosti) - Two police officers were wounded when their vehicle came under fire in Ingushetia, an Interior Ministry official in the southern Russian republic said on Thursday.

The attack occurred late on Wednesday in the republic's Sunzha region, west of Chechnya, when gunmen fired at the police vehicle from automatic weapons, the official said. He said the officers were traveling to check a report on an explosion.

"Two officers received leg wounds. The attackers fled the scene in a car. A search operation has been launched," the official said.

Violence has spiraled in Russia's mainly Muslim North Caucasus regions in recent months. Attacks on police, troops and authorities have been staged almost daily and are blamed on militants infiltrating from Chechnya.

Chechnya has also seen a surge in violence since the Kremlin officially ended its anti-terrorism operation in April. The republic saw two brutal separatist wars in the 1990s and early 2000s.
