BERLIN, July 20 (RIA Novosti) - A crash initially involving two cars led to a mass pileup of 259 cars and injured 66 people on a German freeway between Berlin and Hannover, German television reported on Monday.
The two vehicles were involved in an accident in heavy rain on a highway near the city of Lerthe on Sunday evening. After the collision, vehicles behind them began slamming into one another, pushing some off the road and creating a traffic jam some 30 kilometers long.
The section of the highway was closed to traffic until Monday morning while 340 rescue workers cleared the road and helped the injured.
The freeway was reopened on Monday morning.
