Azerbaijan has conducted a planned rotation of its peacekeeping contingent in Afghanistan, replacing 43 peacekeepers, the country's Defense Ministry said on Thursday.

BAKU, July 16 (RIA Novosti) - Azerbaijan has conducted a planned rotation of its peacekeeping contingent in Afghanistan, replacing 43 peacekeepers, the country's Defense Ministry said on Thursday.

A total of 90 Azerbaijani peacekeepers are currently serving in Afghanistan as part of the International Security Assistance Force, a NATO-led security and development mission in the country.

The ministry said in a statement that 43 peacekeepers had returned to Azerbaijan and "43 were sent to Afghanistan."

Azerbaijan sent its first contingent of 23 peacekeepers to Afghanistan in 2001, increasing it to 45 in 2007 and doubling it to 90 this February.
