Pakistan promised India on Thursday to take all necessary measures to bring those behind last November's attack on the Indian city of Mumbai to justice.

CAIRO/MOSCOW, July 16 (RIA Novosti) - Pakistan promised India on Thursday to take all necessary measures to bring those behind last November's attack on the Indian city of Mumbai to justice.

The announcement was made after Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met with his Pakistani counterpart, Yousuf Raza Gilani, on the sidelines of a Non-Aligned Movement summit in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Relations between the two nuclear countries deteriorated after last November's terrorist attack in Mumbai. India blamed the Pakistani-based Lashkar-e-Taiba movement for the assault by heavily-armed gunmen, and said it wanted to see a "visible response" from Islamabad. India also alleged involvement by Pakistani security forces in the attacks, something Pakistan has denied.

"Prime Minister Singh reiterated the need to bring the perpetrators of the Mumbai attack to justice. Prime Minister Gilani assured that Pakistan will do everything in its power in this regard," the statement said. "Both prime ministers recognized that dialogue is the only way forward."

They also said that talks on terrorism should not be linked to talks on a range of other issues, including water and the disputed Kashmir region.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since 1947. A 2001-2002 military standoff saw both countries amass troops in Kashmir.
