BEIJING, July 15 (RIA Novosti) - The death toll following ethnic clashes in China's Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region has risen to 192, Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.

Chinese authorities earlier said that 184 people had died with around 1,000 injured after protests against ethnic attacks in Urumqi, the capital of China's northwest region, quickly escalated into running battles between Han Chinese and Muslim Uighurs.

The Chinese government earlier said that 137 Han Chinese and 46 Uighurs were among the dead, although the World Uighur Congress, citing witnesses on the ground, reported that around 400 ethnic Uighurs could have died in the worst violence in the region for 60 years.

Chinese troops were deployed into the city of 2.4 million to restore order and keep warring groups apart in what China's senior security official, Zhou Yongkang, earlier called a "steel wall" of security to "win the tough war of maintaining Xinjiang's stability."
