ASTANA, July 5 (RIA Novosti) - Six people have died in a road crash in central Kazakhstan's Akmola province, the country's emergencies ministry reported.

On Saturday, a man driving an Audi near the town of Stepnogorsk hit a pedestrian, before swerving into another car. As a result, the pedestrian, both drivers, and three passengers died on site, the ministry's press service said.

An investigation into the incident is underway.

Kazakhstan's traffic death rate has been on the rise in recent years, with surging car ownership and a lack of road maintenance.

According to a recent report from the World Bank, "Half of the roads in the country's network need major maintenance or full rehabilitation... Kazakhstan's road safety record is poor with road accidents and fatality rates increasing in recent years."
