MOSCOW, May 28 (RIA Novosti) - An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale hit the Caribbean Sea early on Thursday morning, killing at least one person and destroying homes in Honduras and Belize, regional media said.
The earthquake occurred at 3:24 am local time [08:24 GMT], 64 kilometers off the Honduras-owned island of Roatan.
"Honduran rescue workers have confirmed the death of one person as a result of the earthquake and two others in a serious condition have been hospitalized. Rescue work is continuing in the area and people are being evacuated," a HRN correspondent reported from the earthquake-stricken area.
A number of homes were also destroyed in Belize, most of which had been built on stilts.
Tsunami warnings have been issued for both Honduras and Belize.
