The United States will give Pakistan $100 million to help refugees, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Tuesday.

WASHINGTON, May 19 (RIA Novosti) - The United States will give Pakistan $100 million to help refugees, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Tuesday.

She said the money would mainly be spent on assistance to Pakistanis who have been forced from their homes by Taliban activity.

The Pakistani authorities have been carrying out a large-scale operation against Taliban in the country's northwest since late April, and the country's prime minister earlier gave an order to kill militants whose actions threaten the government.

More than 2 million residents have fled their homes since the start of the operation. Pakistan's population is over 160 million.

The United Nations has called on all states to render humanitarian aid to Pakistani refugees. The United States had previously provided Pakistan with about $5 million, Britain has given $15 million, and other countries have also offered assistance.
