TBILISI, May 11 (RIA Novosti) - President Mikheil Saakashvili is holding talks in Tbilisi with the Georgian opposition, which is demanding his resignation, the Imedi TV channel reported Monday.

The meeting is taking place behind closed doors in the Interior Ministry, with representatives of the Alliance for Georgia, Georgia's Path and National Forum parties participating, as well as opposition leader Levan Gachechiladze.

On the part of the government, the talks involve parliamentary speaker David Bakradze and other officials.

"Mikheil Saakashvili hopes the authorities can overcome all problems existing in the country thanks to joint efforts with all political forces," a statement distributed by the presidential administration said.

Georgian opposition leaders on Thursday gave Saakashvili three days to meet with them to discuss their demand for early elections, otherwise, they threatened to start blocking the country's highways.

The opposition, who have been demonstrating against the president on the streets of the capital for more than a month, claim over 60 people, including six police officers, were injured in clashes at a police compound in the Tbilisi suburb of Didi Digomi, on Wednesday night.
