BEIJING, April 11 (RIA Novosti) - An ASEAN summit in Pattaya, Thailand, has been canceled over protests in the summit press center, the Xinhua news agency said citing sources in the Chinese embassy in Thailand.

Anti-government protests started in Pattaya, 150 kilometers south of Bangkok, on Friday. On Saturday protestors burst into the ASEAN summit media center.

Thousands-strong demonstrations continue in the capital Bangkok, with protestors demanding that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva resign.

Protest actions in Thailand started in March this year after the government allocated to 9 million low-paid Thai workers assistance worth $55 to each. Protestors called the assistance "bribing" and said the cabinet got power illegally.

Vejjajiva has introduced a state of emergency in Pattaya. AFP reported that helicopters have started evacuating foreign leaders.
