Abkhazia has decided to reinforce protection of its border with Georgia, which will be done together with the Russian military contingent, the former Georgian republic's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.
SUKHUMI, April 8 (RIA Novosti) - Abkhazia has decided to reinforce protection of its border with Georgia, which will be done together with the Russian military contingent, the former Georgian republic's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

The ministry said the move was due to "the increasing threat of armed provocations on the part of Georgia" and the recent seizure by Georgia of a Turkish tanker heading from Sukhumi to Istanbul in neutral waters.

The ministry also said additional measures were being taken to improve air defense and ship navigation security.

Russia recognized Abkhazia and another former Georgia republic, South Ossetia, as independent states on August 26 last year after a five-day war with Georgia, which attacked South Ossetia to try to regain control of the region.

Abkhazia has since reported numerous border provocations by Georgia.

Abkhazia and South Ossetia split from Georgia in the early 1990s, and most residents of both republics have had Russian citizenship for a number of years.
