Russia's resources minister tops Cabinet income ratings

Subscribe
MOSCOW, April 7 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's natural resources minister earned a whopping 369.9 million rubles last year, according to ministerial income declarations posted on the government website on Tuesday.

Yury Trutnev's $11 million is almost 100 times more than President Dmitry Medvedev listed in his declaration, which was published on Monday and put his 2008 income at 4.14 million rubles ($123,000). Medvedev's wife, Svetlana, has over 135,000 rubles ($4,045) in bank accounts.

However, much of Trutnev's vast income was the result of the sale of his shares in EKS, a company he founded that owns a chain of supermarkets in the Perm Region, where he was once governor.

According to the Cabinet members' certificates of income placed on the Russian White House website, second and third places go to Transportation Minister Igor Levitin and Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko, with annual incomes of 20.6 million ($614,000) and 14.2 million rubles ($423,000) respectively.

The declarations are also revealing about the cars Russian ministers like to drive. Mercedes is the most popular brand, with the family of First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov leading the way with four of the luxury German vehicles. Transportation Minister Levitin's family has two.

Porsche and Toyota are the second-ranked vehicles, with four of each shared among the ministers. Trutnev's family accounts for two of the Porsches - a Cayenne SUV and a 911.

Three of the Cabinet, including Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, have no personal vehicles, while the long-serving emergencies minister, Sergei Shoigu, owns a classic 1957 ZIM GAZ 12.

Vladimir Putin, who stepped down as president last May to become prime minister, earned more than Medvedev in 2008 with 4.7 million rubles ($140,700), including a military pension of 100,600 rubles ($3,000).

Putin's wife, Lyudmila, declared no income in 2008.
