Palestinian political rivals to reconvene next week in Cairo

CAIRO, March 19 (RIA Novosti) - Fatah and Hamas, along with other Palestinian factions, will reconvene next week in Cairo to continue talks on creating a unified national government, Egypt's MENA news agency reported on Thursday.

During the meetings, a document on unification and national accord is planned to be signed.

Hamas has held power in Gaza since 2007, while Fatah, led by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, controls the West Bank.

Fatah has renounced violence, while Hamas refuses to recognize Israel and reserves the right to use violence in its struggle to create a Palestinian state.

The rival movements resumed contact only after the three-week Israeli military onslaught in Gaza that ended in January, leaving about 1,300 Palestinians dead. The attack was launched in retaliation to homemade rockets launched by Gaza militants.
