TEL AVIV, March 12 (RIA Novosti) - The Israeli military carried out new airstrikes on Thursday on tunnels used to smuggle weapons into the Gaza Strip, following daily mortar fire from Palestinian militants, the army press service reported.

The goal of the Israeli strikes was to destroy two of the hundreds of tunnels used to bring in armaments and other items into the blockaded enclave from Egypt.

There have been no reports of deaths or injuries from the latest airstrikes.

The cross-border violence has continued as the sides continue to negotiate the terms of a long-term truce deal. Hamas is demanding that Israel lift its economic blockade of the coastal enclave, while Israel is seeking the return of its captured soldier Gilad Shalit.

A total of 140 rockets have been launched into Israeli territory since Israel concluded its devastating attack on Gaza, which left about 1,300 Palestinians dead, on January 18.
