MOSCOW, March 11 (RIA Novosti) - Zenit St. Petersburg have signed Portuguese central defender Fernando Meira from Turkish club Galatasaray, the Russian club said on its website on Wednesday.
Meira, who has played 54 times for the Portuguese national side, signed a three year contract with the UEFA Cup holders. Zenit are reported to have paid six million euros ($7.6 million) for the player.
The defender had played for Galatasaray since July 2008.
Zenit travel to Italy to take on Udinese in a UEFA Cup last 16, first leg match on Wednesday.
In other Russian soccer news, Lokomotiv Moscow's bid for Schalke 04 forward and German international Kevin Kuranyi has been turned down by the Bundesliga club.
