TEHRAN, February 20 (RIA Novosti) - Russian-Iranian trade turnover rose to $3.7 billion last year, Russia's deputy foreign minister said on Friday.

"We are delighted that trade turnover between our countries reached $3.7 billion last year. This is a significant figure, and one which is expected to be higher this year," Alexei Borodavkin said following scheduled talks between Russian and Iranian foreign ministry officials in the Iranian capital of Tehran.

He said Moscow and Tehran considered the development of bilateral economic relations a means to overcome the economic and financial problems that the countries were facing.

Borodavkin also pointed to Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko's recent co-chairing of a Russian-Iranian intergovernmental commission as "extra evidence that oil, gas, nuclear energy and electricity are prioritized in our economic cooperation with Iran."

He added that the development of science-driven industries was also on the agenda of bilateral trade issues.

The official promised further cooperation in military supplies in line with international laws. "I want to confirm that military and technical cooperation between Russia and Iran will continue," Borodavkin said.
