RIGA, January 31 (RIA Novosti) - The resignation of Latvia's government would help ease the tense political situation in the country, a senior opposition member of parliament told RIA Novosti on Saturday.

Latvia had the worst-performing economy in the European Union last year and opinion polls show more than 70% of Latvians do not trust the government.

"The fall of the government would help to relieve the intense political situation in the republic. People would have the opportunity to let off steam," Andrei Klementyev of the Accord Center party said.

He said the government could try to form a new coalition and that opposition parties would not try to take power.

"Elections to local authorities and the European Parliament take place in the summer, and no one from the opposition wants to kill his popularity," Klementyev said.

The economic situation in the country led to protests outside parliament earlier this month, which turned violent with stones and bottles thrown at the building.
