MINSK, January 12 (RIA Novosti) - Police in Minsk have detained three opposition activists who were handing out free buckwheat porridge, and confiscated the food to give to soldiers, the organizers of a protest in the capital said on Monday.

European Belarus, a civil organization campaigning for the country's integration into the European Union, had earlier launched a campaign to protest against the "irresponsible policies" of the country's government during the global financial crisis.

On Sunday, the movement's activists unfolded a banner saying "The country is in crisis! Food distribution," and began distributing buckwheat porridge in plastic dishes, saying that the organization simply wanted to provide its fellow citizens with nourishment amid the crisis.

However, police interrupted the distribution of food, seizing some 15 kilogram of buckwheat porridge and arresting three opposition activists. The food was then distributed among soldiers patrolling the area, while the activists were released some two hours later.
