CAIRO, January 11 (RIA Novosti) - Four Egyptians have received shrapnel wounds as Israel bombarded an area in the Gaza Strip bordering Egypt, a local TV channel reported on Sunday.

Nile News reported that Israeli military aircraft fired on Palestinian territory adjoining Egypt where underground tunnels for arms smuggling into Gaza may be located, inflicting considerable damage on buildings along the border.

The four injured were two Egyptian armed forces officers and two children aged 5 and 2, the channel said.

At the start of Israeli operations in Gaza an Egyptian military officer was killed and two others wounded as a result of what Egypt said was gunfire from Palestinian militants.

The Rafah checkpoint connecting Egypt and Gaza has been closed for over 18 months since the Islamist Hamas movement seized power in the Palestinian enclave. Only wounded Palestinians and those accompanying them, as well as humanitarian cargos, are allowed to cross the border.

A representative of Gaza's health ministry told journalists earlier that 854 Palestinians had died in Israel's two-week assault on the enclave of 1.5 million people. He added that the total included 270 children, 68 women, and 90 elderly people.
