MOSCOW, January 5 (RIA Novosti) - Three people died in separates fires in Moscow on Monday morning as deaths from apartment fires in the capital rose to at least 16 over the New Year holiday period, the emergencies ministry said.

The ministry said two people were killed in a fire in an apartment in southwest Moscow, and a man died when firefighters were called to a blaze in a ground floor flat in west Moscow.

On Sunday a first deputy chief of the capital's emergencies ministry's department, Viktor Klimkin, said, "If on January 1 two people died, then by January 2 five people were killed, on January 3 six people perished and today another person died."

Klimkin said that the main cause for the fires was smoking in bed while drunk. He warned Muscovites to be careful "there is a week left until the end of the holidays."

Russia will celebrate New Year and Orthodox Christmas until January 11.
