MOSCOW, January 3 (RIA Novosti) - Two people died on Saturday when a female, who had earlier been detained for drink driving, killed a pedestrian before smashing into a tree in south Moscow, a police spokesman said.
"Around 5:00 a.m. (02:00 GMT) in Domodedovo a 24-year-old female from Moscow lost control of her Opel and crashed into a pedestrian and then hit a tree. The 40-year-old pedestrian died of his injuries, and the driver, who was at fault," the spokesman said.
Earlier traffic police had detained the female for drink driving and impounded her Opel.
"However, a little while later the girl's friend collected the car from the pound on her behalf, after which she again ended up behind the wheel. This had catastrophic consequences," the police spokesman said.
He added that some 63 traffic accidents, resulting in the deaths of nine people and some 80 injured, had been recorded on Moscow Region's roads in the first two days of the New Year.
