VELIKY NOVGOROD, December 19 (RIA Novosti) - A total of 38 European cities have already applied to take part in the XXIX Hansa Convention in the northwestern Russian city of Veliky Novgorod next summer, a source in the city administration said on Friday.

The international forum, Hanseatic Days, will be held in Novgorod on June 18-21 as part of events to mark the city's 1150th anniversary.

"We will receive delegations from Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden and other countries," the source said.

The final list of participants will be known by February 2009, but Novgorod authorities expect delegations from over 100 cities in 15 countries to take part.

The Hanseatic League was an influential confederation of cities in northern and central Europe during the Middle Ages. The league existed for about 500 years, and covered a territory from London in the west to Novgorod in the east. Major decisions both economic and political were adopted at biennial meetings, called the Hanseatic Days.

The confederation of Hansa cities, along with the tradition of the Hanseatic Days, was revived in 1980 and now comprises over 200 cities in 17 European countries.
