VIENNA, December 10 (RIA Novosti) - An armored vehicle carrying OSCE monitors came under fire near Georgia's border with South Ossetia on Wednesday, no one was injured, European officials said.

The routine patrol, travelling in a car clearly identified with the letters "OSCE," came under fire when two unidentified men in camouflage uniform emerged from bushes close to the track and began shooting with sub-machine guns, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe said on its website.

The incident took place in the Gori region.

"I strongly condemn and deplore this serious attack on unarmed military monitoring officers," said Tehri Hakala, head of the OSCE Mission to Georgia. "The details of this unacceptable incident are being looked into carefully."

"This is another regrettable reminder of the urgent need to improve the security situation in the area and the OSCE is continuing to devote all its efforts to this issue," said Hakala.

South Ossetia was at the heart of the armed conflict between Georgia and Russia in August. Tensions remain high in the border area.
