GENEVA, December 8 (RIA Novosti) - Switzerland's Foreign Ministry has officially agreed to represent Russia's interests in Georgia.

According to information on the Foreign Ministry's website, Switzerland's embassy in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi will represent Russia in diplomatic issues.

Georgia broke all diplomatic ties with Russia after it recognized the independence of two Georgian breakaway regions, South Ossetia and Abkhazia, on August 26.

Russia's move came two weeks after the end of a military operation to "force Georgia to peace" that was launched in response to an attack by Georgian troops on the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali. Hundreds of civilians and a number of Russian peacekeepers were killed in the attack.

The Swiss Embassy in Tbilisi said in October that it was ready to represent Russia's interests in Georgia. Switzerland has wide experience in the field, currently representing both the interests of Cuba and Iran in the United States, and U.S. interests in Cuba.

The Georgian Foreign Ministry has stated it has no objections to Switzerland representing Russia's diplomatic interests in Georgia.
