Zenit defeats Spartak 3-1, qualifies for Europa League

MOSCOW, November 22 (RIA Novosti) - Zenit St. Petersburg beat Spartak Moscow 3-1 on Saturday, taking fifth place in the Russian Premier League with 48 points, and winning a chance to play in the 2009/2010 Europa League, the current UEFA Cup.

Pavel Pogrebnyak scored the first goal in the fifth minute of the match, held at Moscow's Luzhniki stadium. Referee Igor Yegorov paused the game for a few minutes as Zenit fans celebrated the goal with smoke flares.

Danny Miguel, the Portuguese midfielder, scored the second goal minutes after the match resumed, and pushed the score to 3-0 before the end of the first half.

Alexander Pavlenko scored Spartak's first and final goal in the second half. As a result, the Moscow club finished eighth with 44 points.

Moscow police detained over 170 people, including Zenit fans, after the match, a local police spokesman said.
